Iguazu Falls, Argentina

During a trip to Brazil, I spent three days at Iguazu Falls. The waterfall system consists of 275 falls along 2.7 kilometers (1.67 miles), making it the largest waterfall system in the world. The sights and sounds are overwhelming!

The falls are visible from both the Argentine side and the Brazilian side. On the Argentine side, you will be up close and person - right next to the steepest, loudest section of the falls (Garganta do Diablo). The Brazilian side, however, provides a better view. To visit the falls, you will need to buy entrance tickets to the National Parks.

We stayed at a hotel on the Brazilian side of the falls, but crossed to the Argentine side using a private taxi, set up by our receptionist. Our driver could not have been more kind and helpful. I would highly recommend going this route (as opposed to renting a car or going via bus) as it makes crossing the border legally seamless. Additionally, taxi drivers have tourism licenses, which allows them to bypass any heavy traffic if there is any.

*Though not required, we got Yellow Fever vaccinations before travelling to the falls. In recent years, there has been a spike in outbreaks in Brazil.

Activities:

  • I highly recommend a helicopter tour over the falls. Seeing it from above really gives the perspective to see just how expansive the falls are. It did feel a bit like tourist trap as the helicopters were constantly loaded and pushed off the landing pad. My boyfriend was such a sweetheart and took the middle seat so that I could take photos by the window. Big thank you to his grandparents in Texas for treating us to this on Valentines Day!

  • We did not have time to see the falls from the Brazilian side. Instead, we chose to explore the Argentine side well. First, we walked to Garganta do Diablo. The views were stunning, but be prepared for crowds. We chose to walk to Lower Circuit nature path to get alternate views of the rainforest and the river.

Food:

  • We unexpectedly ended up at a random Italian restaurant that was quirky and simultaneously delicious. The wine was so good!

Accommodation:

  • Belmond owns a property, Hotel das Cataratas, which is hands down the most ideal place to stay. Surrounded by lush rainforest, the retreat grants exclusive access to the park.
